Wood’s Season comes to a Close

Wood battles but loses to Diablos

Diablos 2, Wood 1

August 11th, 2011

San Leandro, Ca – Despite a valiant effort and behind solid pitching, Wood lost a heartbreaker to the Diablos to close out the 2011 campaign. A record crowd turned out to watch this pitching duel, which was highlighted by a complete-game, four-hitter pitched by the Diablos starter.

There aren’t a lot of highlights to write about in this one, but it was a well played game on both sides. Steve McDevitt started the game for Wood and allowed just two runs, one earned over 6 1/3 innings, while striking out seven. Both runs seemed to come auspiciously, yet in other instances McDevitt pitched himself out of jams in which runs probably should have scored, so ultimately it all worked out evenly.

Wood bats were unfortunately left for dead on this night, essentially no-hit into the seventh inning with the exception of a debatable infield single in the fourth. A rally was amassed in the eighth with a big hit coming from Mike Moyer, and from pinch hitter Grant Bledsoe, but ultimately resulted in just one run.

Moyer also relieved McDevitt in the seventh to keep the game at a one run deficit, and pitched brilliantly. First he got McDevitt out of a jam in the inning then went on to blank the Diablos the next inning out.

Regardless of the outcome it was a great year for Wood. Record aside, Wood made the playoffs for a second consecutive year, and it took a masterful pitching performance to send Wood packing.

A special thanks to all Wood, Woodettes, and Wood faithful that followed the blog, and the team during the 2011 campaign.

Lest we not forget the man, and legend Brandon “profanity is not necessary ,I do understand how I only got a 40%; I didn’t realize the test was printed on both” Sides, who dedicated his time and energy to Wood. His efforts are definitely appreciated and do not go unnoticed.

See you next year.
